What a blessing it is to live in a country where we are able to wear what we want, be friends with whom we want, marry who we want, and worship our God freely! Yet we forget that sometimes. Celebrating the 4th of July this year with my family helped me to reflect on what it is to be free. Truly F R E E. The ultimate freedom is living in Christ.
We live free from guilt and sin because Jesus died on the cross.
So maybe you are asking: What does God really want for us? What is the purpose of freedom in Christ? What does it look like? What was the point of Jesus dying for us?….Well, I don’t have all the answers but I will say this: God knew we were sinners and we needed salvation. That’s what I think the point is.
Of course we all struggle—whether it’s those of you struggling with relationship issues, raising difficult teenagers, chronic health issues, anxiety, fear, anger, etc–these are all signs that we’re still on a journey. We are still working out our freedom. We are in a spiritual warfare. We need to keep our eyes on Jesus. Paul writes earlier in this verse that although we “live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.” Remember that God gave us the ultimate freedom: Christ dying on the cross. Sometimes we have a hard time receiving it, but if we can wrap our heads around the fact that we are imperfect and we make mistakes and we get distracted by worldly things, BUT no matter what, Jesus, through his Grace, will carry us through.
